This here is one of my favorite pieces of software. It's easy to use and supports many of the languages I use regularly and has a very powerful function to search for specific text within an entire directory.  If you do a lot of scripting or have a multi-language environment Notepad++ is a must-have.

GIMP: A Free Photoshop Alternative

Rating: 7/10

Let me start off by saying that I am not a very creative man.  Once in a great while, I need to repair or otherwise modify a photo someone sends me.  For someone like me, shelling out the money for a full license of Adobe PhotoShop is not a good use of resources.

Enter GIMP, a free image manipulation tool that has more features than I could ever hope to use.  Where it falls a bit for me is that the interface isn't readily intuitive for a newbie, but with a few hours messing around, and a few fantastic YouTube tutorials I was doing things I never thought I would do.

If you are are just looking to add sepia tones to your pics, GIMP may be overkill for you, but if you take image manipulation seriously, GIMP is a serious contender as top dog.

LastPass: A Browser-Based Password Tool That Works

Reviewer: Scott W.
Site: LastPass
Pricing: Free for personal use
Rating: 8/10

There are a lot of password aggregation tools out there, each with their own pros and cons.  LastPass takes a lot of the hassle out of password management and makes security easy to use.

The signup and installation are downright easy, just set up a master password to secure your keys, validate your e-mail and add the extension to your browser, and as you type in passwords it will prompt you to add them to your vault if you have not already done so.

Where LastPass shines is in its ability to let you know when you have a password that is less secure than it could be (easy to guess, used in multiple places, etc.). From there, LastPass can attempt to generate a new password and apply it to the web pages.

With extensions for all the big name browsers and apps for Android and Apple operating systems, this is a security application that is a breeze.
